Production nuggets

crazy how you can get to making stuff somehow louder, while clearer, and more comfortable to listen to

Mixx is good, I used it before switching to a NI setup. Traktor integrates a bit better with my hardware but I liked mixx a lot. Had the occassional stability issue though

I’m going to take a grain of salt but I have been using Serato light which is my hardware unlock but it sucks. Not just because of the features that they cut but it doesn’t run good on my laptop. But just very quickly mixx seemed to run great. Worst case scenario I will have to switch back over to Serato in the middle of a set. I can talk it out on the stream tho.

But Rekordbox and Serato has an unreasonable price. You can’t even buy rekordbox anymore and Serato is like 250 just for the basic stuff then they lock you out or that software eventually.

modern versions of serato are real power hungry and you need a supercomputer to run it.even if it says it will run on your toaster it probably wont
my controller unlocks the pro version automatically but it just distorts as soon as i try to mix.hence me using virtual dj even though i have to pay extra.
sucks i can’t sell the serato either cos it’s only unlockable by using my controller.
might have a look at mixx

I’m looking to get the xdj stuff. I just want to get away from the laptop. All I have right now is an old MacBook Air. It barely runs Serato but mixx seems ok.

Wow, I didn’t realize rekordbox went subscription only. That blows. I actually think Traktor was opened up for use with any controller and it has a pretty extensive midi mapping tools. It might actually be a decent option at $99. Free demo to check comparability

Xdj stuff is beyond the “toys for boys” level. It’s quite an investment.

A VirtualDJ Pro license costs only $19 per month and can be canceled at any time.
Alternatively, you can also opt for a one-time purchase, with VirtualDJ Pro Infinity, for the price of $299.

A Home Plus license still exists and will set you back $99.

Serato Pro costs €299, also available as a subscription model.

Yeah it’s a lot, not worth it to me. I don’t do subscription at all either.

I’m not really DJ’ing anymore but I upgraded to Traktor 3 last month for $25.

I was planning on doing a project with it this summer. Might still just use Ableton though.

Another day away from the studio, so living vicariously through another production tip.

Want wide bass? Duplicate your bass channel using a send or other method, then insert eq → distortion/overdrive/saturation → chorus → eq

With the first eq you can reduce or exaggerate certain harmonics in order to shape the distortion tone. Taking out most of the content below 200 Hz will result in a much more middy distortion. Great for growly mids.

The drive stage can be any sort of saturator, distortion etc. Try different ones.

The chorus is what adds width. A short reverb is also an option.

With the post eq you can tidy up the parallel channel. Roll off the highs to make it smoother and less obvious, clean up unwanted resonances etc so it gels nicely with the original bass.

Then maybe sum the two bass channels together and saturate them or limit a bit to glue them together even more.

This method is often nicest with basses that don’t contain lots of harmonics already

A subtle touch of OTT at the end can help push the bass in your face

Subtle “over the top” eh

Lol. But yeah I only seem to get good results with it at 5-15% intensity. Maybe 20 in rare cases. Have seen the likes of Mr Bill chaining multiple OTTs to completely smash sounds with success, but it doesn’t appear to work for me

I am definitely more liberal with my OTT. Other tools are better for subtlety.

A typical Billy tune looks like this in an spectrum analyzer…

The mix seems too silent, if I turn the bass down the other stuff gets louder but the bass seems to be gone.
What should I do?

Try ducking/sidechain compression

I sidechain kick and bass already. Should I sidechain something else too?

Its really hard to say without hearing what you’re working with. Multi band compression on your mix bus could help too. I would try that first if you’re not already.

It looks like you need a ton of top end and high mids. That analiyzer doesn’t look very accurate tho. I would use span or graphic eq or something
